The Grasshopper Project

Several months ago, I think it might have been the beginning of summer, I started seeing some unusual looking grasshopper all over my neighborhood. I have been living in South Florida for almost 15 years, and this was my first encounter with these alien looking species. According to my neighbor, the appear every 17 years.
Although I was a bit freaked out by these creatures – after all, I did not know much about them – I was also a bit fascinated. I started wondering how I could incorporate them into one of my projects.
One afternoon I went out to my patio to water my plants and this is what I saw.
I carefully moved in for a closeup shot…
This plant was like an all you can eat buffet for these creatures. I was not pleased!
Anyway, I went to my calm drafting/crafting place and I came up with a few ways to incorporate these guys into a project.
I illustrated my version of Mr. grasshopper (using Adobe Illustrator). At first I was going to use it in an embroidery project – and I still might – but then I decided to combine it with a bamboo plant from another project that is in the works.
I had also done an illustration of a Hyacinth plant – (I love these plants, but unfortunately the strong fragrance makes me sneeze) – So I can only admire an image of the beautiful plant.
I am definitely going to do an embroidery project with the hyacinth.
I don’t yet know if my grasshopper project is going to end as a pillow or as a print or both. I will keep you posted.
If I were to do a pillow, this is what it could look like – I may decrease the size of the Grasshopper. It is a bit exaggerated in this image – or maybe I will leave it as is.

We live in South FL as well and noticed these ‘bugs’ at the begining of summer. the are beautiful to look at, but the kept eating my orchids – I too was not pleased.
I like hoe you incorporated them in your project – now they are beautiful and harmless.
